#130 - Determination of Benzene Levels

Run exposure limit for benzene requires employers to limit the amount of benzene exposed in an atmosphere to a maximum of 1 ppm over and eight hour period. There is a ceiling limit of 5 ppm for any 15 minute period.

The recommended NIOSH method utilizes charcoal tubes for collection of solvent vapor. The tubes are used with a portable personal pump to collect solvent vapors from the air. The sample is then injected into the Series 580 FID GC. The chromatograph performs the analysis of 1 ppm benzene within three minutes.
